INSURANCE

INTRODUCTION

Before you start your business venture it would be very wise to carry out research into the many types of insurance policies available and then choose which one would be necessary whilst assessing their cost-to-benefit ratio. Before selecting a particular insurance policy, always compare the quotes from several different insurance agents and ask each one to explain the benefits of his or her policy.

HEALTH INSURANCE

If you are starting a business it is a good idea to get insurance coverage and look around to see if you can get a better rate if you select a small business package. For a new start-up business it is often difficult to afford health insurance for their chances of finding and keeping good employees.

AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE

It is important to have automobile insurance cover if you or your employees use an automobile for business purposes. Always check to see if an insurance policy includes an exclusion for business use and be sure that your liability policy covers you if one of your employees causes an accident.

HOME BUSINESS INSURANCE

If you decide to set-up a home-based business you will find that most home-owner and tenant insurance policies do not cater for any business activity. You will most likely have a problem if you have equipment or allocate a portion of your home to your business. However, you should heave no problems if you only make business phone calls or send/receive letters from your home. You should always check with your insurance company to clarify your specific situation and questions.

HAZARD INSURANCE

You should make enquiries before you set-up your business into hazard insurance. There have been many past examples of companies closing down after having experienced some natural disaster of disastrous event which has resulted in loosing customer lists and equipment. Many insurance policies exist which could not only protect you from the loss of your company but could even cover your losses while your business recovers, the latter case is known as interruption insurance.

WORKERS COMPENSATION

Another type of insurance which is not legally required in the State of Texas is worker’s compensation insurance. This type of insurance covers workers for injuries and illnesses which are related to their jobs. You would be very wise to get this type of insurance coverage as your business will transfer all of its potential liability to an insurance company and is then protected against lawsuits.

LIABILITY INSURANCE

The majority of states within the USA stipulate that businesses should have liability insurance coverage.
Liability insurance itself can be divided into 2 main areas. The first type is coverage for injuries caused by your products or services, whilst the second type of insurance coverage relates to injuries on your premises and by your employees. The cost of coverage for the first type of liability insurance can be very high and it is often difficult to get an insurance company to provide the coverage. The very high compensations given to injured people in several instances has been so high that it has resulted in the business being closed. The liability insurance coverage related to the second category is much more reasonably priced and are covered by standard premises or auto policies.

ASSET PROTECTION

If you are unable to obtain or unable to afford such insurance policies, you could do without and use a corporation and or other asset protection devices to protect yourself from liability. It is a good idea to check in newsletters or magazines associated with your particular business sector as there may be a section of recommended insurers.

UMBRELLA POLICY

If you are a business owner, you will be the most visible target for any lawsuits that could be made against your company, so it would be wise for you to get a personal umbrella policy which covers you for claims of up to $ 5 million and is often reasonable priced
